Hosting Kiruba & going to ask what he does for a living!

If you are one among my twitter followers, this will be an old news for you! For others, yes! When Kiruba is coming to Sappora (Japan) for participating in the iCommons Summit, I am going to host him for the 1st weekend of August.
When I said I am hosting Kiruba, Sujay, one of my friend (not through any social network, but he was my classmate!) instantly asked “What he do for a living?!” And I promised him I’ll definitely get him an answer.

Even I had this doubt!
How Kiruba’s managing so many?
How he’s a Jack of all trade & master of many!
What are all we do for entertainment, cautiously, without the knowledge of our superiors, he’s pursuing in the mainstream! And he’s also paid for that!

So this question ringed a bell & thought of getting some interesting questions from you & present it before him!
(I have a question! If Nilu meets Kiruba!, what will they talk? or how will they react!)
And Tech & Tamil enthusiast Ravi asks about how Kiruba prospects happenings, trends & investments in Indian regional language web companies,especially Tamil.

Calling Indians from Japan - Cards & other options

Before the post… The best option to make any international call is: Skype-to-Skype which is absolutely free (when your employer pays for your net connection!). But since my parents are devoid of computer access, I explored other options & below is my experience.

I am in Japan now for a 3-month holiday… OK! Do not feel jealous! Am here for work!
When I tried to call my parents, my first & known option was Skype-to-phone option (and the residence here luckily had a skype phone which was bought by a good-soul & left here itself when he returned, to help his colleagues!)

When I was going through Skype’s plans, I was a bit frustrated at first that Skype do not accept payments through direct netbanking. A friend helped me to buy credit through his credit card. It was ¥1500 with ¥12 (Rs.4.75) / min (Rs.590 / 125 minutes) with rounding of to 1 minute. The customer-winning feature of skype should clearly be its 1-minute FREE call to even mobile. (I am thinking to register 120 free ids & correspondingly 120 gmail ids to gain 2 hours!- They are right when they claimed only Indians invented the missed call!). I believe this because even Tpad has the same set of skype-features.(Their PC-to-Mobile to India is cheaper than skype ¥7(Rs.2.75) / min). But the missing feature is “where is my free trial call to trust you?“.

Once I bought the skype credit through a credit card, it was immediately activated. Except that the reception in India is somewhat slow, the voice clarity is excellent when called through skype phone. Now as I am left only with a balance of ¥350, I am looking for other cheaper options.

1. I noticed that the Golden Lotus prepaid cards are very cheap - works out to ¥ 5(or Rs.2) /min to India! But here is the catch - it has a maintanence fee attached - $1 (¥106 or Rs. 42) / week. So every week you are losing 20 minutes! I think this should be the best option for men who got engaged & been in Japan during their legalized love period! Rs.2.50 / min to India should be a great gift for them to talk sweet nothings with their prospective spouse (if the girl cannot access Internet easily) and happily spend the 180 minutes (Should be only 3 hours in their perspective!) within a week & getting ready for the next one in the next week!

2. Mt. Fuji calling cards - Got this hat tip from Gowrishankar, a friend whom I met in Kuala Lumpur airport. (Sorry that no link for the cards is available!) These are got from Indian shops. - 7 hrs and 33 min per card (¥1500) with 4 min extra cut for every call. It will make your ISD call from land line phone to India as a local call [¥10 (Rs.4)/3 min]! But wait! The catch is the rate is applicable to calls made from Japan landline phone which I think is hard to find (atleast for me!)

3. Tpad PC-to-Phone option - Just like skype, But I haven’t tried this and have not got any personal experience. So no other details. They also have a price comparison chart, which says its even cheaper then skype with other not-so-useful-for-India features.

I have not explored any options so far! If any one come to this blog though google (Or any loyal readers for this blog(?), if you exists!) can help!

மலேஷியாவிலிருந்து வெங்கட்ரமணன்!

தற்சமயம் கோலாலம்பூர் விமான நிலையத்தில் டோக்கியா செல்வதற்காக(விமான நிலையம் பெயர் நமீதா அல்ல, நரிதா!)காத்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறேன்! இங்கு ‘எங்கெங்கு காணினும் தமிழரடா’ என்று தமிழ்மக்கள் நீக்கமற நிறைந்திருக்கின்றனர்! சும்மா போகிற போக்கில், “என்னப்பா நல்ல இருக்கியா? அப்புறம் எப்படிப் போகுது?” என்ற தயக்கமில்லாமல் விசாரிக்கலாம். அவரும் “ம். ஏதோ ஓடுது பாஸ்!” என்று பதிலளிப்பார்! தமிழில் விசாரித்தால் மின்னலாய் ஒரு புன்னகை… தோன்றி மறையவில்லை! அந்த புன்னகையுடனேயே உதவி செய்கின்றனர்! (C26 எந்தப்பக்கம் என்று விசாரித்ததற்கு ஒரு அம்மா - “அங்கிட்டு போய் டர்ன் பண்ணி போங்க தம்பி”)
தமிழர்கள் கடை முதலாளிகளாய் இருக்கும் மகிழ்ச்சி மறையும் முன் ஒரு உறுத்தல் - பெரும்பாலான விளிம்புநிலைத் தொழிலாளர்கள் (தரை துடைப்பவர்கள், கழிவறை பேற்பார்வயாளர்கள்…) தமிழர்களாய் உள்ளனர். இவர்களுக்கு ஆனால் இவர்களுக்கும் நல்ல ஊதியம் இருக்கும் என்றே நினைக்கிறேன் (கண்டிப்பாய் இந்தியாவைக் காட்டிலும்).
இங்கு “வர்டா தமிழ்” தொலைக்காட்சியில் கலைஞர், அண்ணாதுரை புகைப்ப்படங்கள் காட்டபடுகின்றனர். ஒரு பணியாளர் நின்று பார்த்து பின் நகர்கிறார்!) கூடவே 1950 வருடமும் காட்டப்படுகின்றன (அநேகமாய் திமுக ஸ்தாபிதம் ஆன வரலாறு என்றே நினைக்கிறேன்) சே! காமிரா இல்லை! இருந்திருந்தால் மலேஷியாவில் கலைஞர் என்று ஸ்கூப் போட்டிருக்கலாம்! புதசெவியை சந்திக்கலாம் என்று நினைத்தேன். முடியவில்லை! பரவாயில்லை! வரும்போது பார்ப்போம்!

எப்படியோ மலேஷியாவில் போய் ஒரு பதிவு போட்டாயிற்று!

IPL கிரிக்கெட் தொடரை உயிர்ப்புடன் வைத்திருக்கும் தினேஷ் கார்த்திக்கின் அரைச் சதம் மற்றும் cricinfoவின் நகைச்சுவை!

கடந்த சனியன்று நடந்த ராஜஸ்தான் - சென்னை இடையேயான ஆட்டத்தில் சென்னையின் போராட்டம்  மீண்டும் சூப்பர் கிங்ஸை நம்ப வைத்துள்ளது [கழுத்தறுத்து விடுவார்களோ? ஆனாலும் சென்னைக்கு அதிர்ஷ்டத்தின் அருள் தாராளமாகவே உண்டு!]. அன்றைய இரண்டாவது ஆட்டத்தில் தினேஷ் கார்த்திக் சொல்ல சொல்லக் கேட்காமல், தன் புகழே (;-)) பெரியதென்று ஆடி தில்லியின் கனவுகளை உயிர்ப்பித்தார்! இதில் தில்லி தோற்றிருந்தால் ஆட்டம் முடிந்தது (ஐ.பி.எல் தகுதிச் சுற்று ஆட்டங்களே முடிந்த மாதிரிதான். யார் யார் அரையிறுதியில் எதிர்கொள்வார்கள் என்பதைத் தீர்மானிக்கவே மீதமிருக்கும் ஐந்து ஆட்டங்கள் உபயோகப்படும்! ஆனால் தினேஷ் கார்த்திக்…நற..நற..) என்றென்றும் அன்புடன் பாலா, இந்த ஆட்டத்தை அழகாகப் பதிவு செய்துள்ளார். கண்டிப்பாக படித்துப் பாருங்கள்! இனி நாம் கில்லியை எதிர்கொண்டு வெற்றிபெற வேண்டும்!

“The three mistakes of my life” - Chetan Bhagat’s 3rd book to be released on May 8th

Aptly coded as 3, Chetan Bhagat’s third book - The three mistakes of my life is getting released on May 8th at Mumbai. (He has separate release schedules for each city - Why Chennai left out? Unfair!) Once I read his first novel - Five Point Someone (Thanks Harish for recommending this), I instantly fell in love with his writing. A casual style, a not-so-super, nothing-is-a-shock type of protagonist, common (college) place incidents, heroic efforts in the climax, a happy ending… a perfect blend for a light reading. When I read his second book - One Night @ the Call Center, I could not resist the feeling “This should have been his first book“! Come on! After writing Five Point Someone, how would one expect Chetan to have the silly, MS Word error to be an important part of the climax. Still the novel was an interesting read & I could identify loosely with Shyam!
And now he compels me with the excerpt for third book.

My first Managerial post! - Suggestions to Success!

One of my friend Nithiyanandha (aka Maams!) had arranged a seminar for the Engineering Students (an individual development session) and has asked for some of my inputs. I am not sure whether I am fit to give advice of this sorts! Any way, as Seth says, Everyone is an expert, so am I!

And here are my points: If its useful, do drop a word!

Never hesitate to take a chance. Understand that when an opportunity arises for a group, everyone is puzzled & all are equally capable (or unable!) to do it. So it does not depend on who do it it. Instead it matters who is first to do it. So always be alert on a rising opportunity.

Always find room for improvement.  It need not be improving your belonging or your job - it can be your day-day commuting. It all depends on whether you will be able to improve it.

You are responsible for what you have done. Even if you have done it under somebody’s 100% guidance, it is from your hand that the work has been done. So you’re responssible

Time is the biggest asset for any business. If its not, then we need to position our business that. At the same time, never brood over the lost time. Thats of no use & eats more time acuumulating the loss further,

Read a lot. This will improve your vocabulary & thought process & help you to express yourself clearly.

Always find a chance to try something new. If your friend find difficulty in his work, take chance to help him. You will have a collective learning experience.

Failure is when you do not use your 100% potential. Try to find a job which will exploit your favourite skills to 100%

Be open to criticism but never be afraid of it. Atleast you are worth enough that people pay attention to take care of your work & have taken the time to give a feedback.

Never pay too much attention to brands. It is not necessary all brands are good. Even MS is screwing things!

Excellence is not always delivered by BIG people. It is delivered by smart people who care for you.

சுஜாதா! பிரிவோம் சந்திப்போம்

சுஜாதா இனி இல்லை!
ஜீரணிப்பதற்கு சற்று சிரமமாக இருந்தாலும் அதுதான் உண்மை!
நேற்று இரவு நண்பர் அரவிந்த் குறுஞ்செய்தி அனுப்பியபோது, சந்தேகம் எல்லாம் வரவில்லை. (அப்போது இணையத்தில் நான் தேடிக் கொண்டிருந்த விஷயம் - “மெல்லத் தமிழினிச் சாகும்”!)
முன்னரே தேசிகனின் இடுகை அவரது உடல்நலக்குறைவைத் தெரிவித்திருந்தாலும் உடனே தோன்றிய ஒரு விஷயம் இதுதான். - ஏன் இவ்வளவு சீக்கிரம்? 72ல்லாம் அவருக்கு ஒரு வயதா?
சில காலம் முன் அவரது உடல்நலம் குன்றிய செய்தியைப் படித்தவுடன் எழுந்த கேள்வி இதுதான் - இவர் இறந்து விட்டால் வலைப்பதிவுகளில் எத்தனை எதிர்வினைகள் வரும்?
அது இத்தனை கொடூரமாக, இவ்வளவு விரைவில் உண்மையாயிருக்க வேண்டாம்.

(நெருங்கிய உறவுகள் தவிர்த்து) எவரது மரணம் நம்மை திகைப்படைய வைக்காது?
வயதாகி, அவர்களது செயல்களில் அது வெளிப்பட்டுக்கொண்டிருந்து இறந்தால், நாம் அவ்வளவாக அதிர்ச்சி அடைய மாட்டோம்!
ஆனால் சுஜாதாவுக்கு வயதாகிவிட்டதா? நம்மை விட இளமையாக சிந்தித்தவர், அற்புதமான நகைச்சுவை உணர்வு கொண்டவர், அபார விஷயஞானம், என எத்தனை சொன்னாலும் கட்டாயம் ஏதேனும் ஒன்று விட்டுப்போய்விடும்!
இன்று 22இலிருந்து 40 வயதினர் (அதற்கும் மேல்) எவரும் அவர் எழுத்தின் ஏதாவது ஒரு வடிவத்தால் கவரப்பட்டிருப்பர்.
அவரின் தனிப்பெரும் அடையாளம் அவரது பன்முகத்தன்மை - சாமான்யன் முதல் ரஜினிகாந்த் வரை அவரது பாத்திரவார்ப்பு அவ்வளவு நேர்த்தி.
ஒட்டுமொத்தமாக மட்டுமல்லாமல், வாசிக்கும் ஒவ்வொருவரும் அவரின் ஏதாவது ஒன்றுடன் தங்களை அடையாளப்படுத்திக் கொண்டிருப்பார்கள்.

இன்று வலையில் வலம் வரும் “எனது குரு, ஆசான், வாத்தியார்” என்பது போன்ற க்ளிஷேக்கள் சிறிதளவு மிகையானாலும் பெருமளவு உண்மை.
அன்றாட நிகழ்வுகள் பலவற்றில் அவரை நினைவு கூரத்தக்க அளவு நம்மை பாதித்தவர் அவர்.
அவரே சொல்வதுபோல் அவரது வெகுஜன பத்திரிக்கை எழுத்துக்கள் மேம்போக்காக இருந்தாலும், அதன் மூலம் திவிரமான பல விஷயங்களை வாசகர்கள் தாங்களாக தேடிக்கொள்ள ஒரு அடித்தளம் அமைத்துக் கொடுத்தவர் சுஜாதா.
அவர் போல் மூன்று (அல்லது நான்கு?) தலைமுறைகள பாதிக்கும் அளவுக்கு எழுத்தில் இனி யாராவது சாதிப்பார்களா? தெரியவில்லை!

P.S அவர் இறந்த செய்தி காட்சி ஊடகங்களில் அவ்வளவாக கண்டுகொள்ளப்படவில்லை என்றே நினைக்கிறேன்.
சன் நியூஸ் தவி்ர்த்து எந்த சேனலும் நேற்று (27 ஃபிப்ரவரி) இதை அறிவித்ததாகத் தெரியவில்லை. இது சற்றே வருத்தமாகத்தான் இருந்தது.

விகடனின் Moral Policing!

“எம்.ஜி.ஆர்.-சிவாஜியை இழிவுபடுத்தினாரா ஜெயமோகன்?” என்ற தலைப்பில் இன்று வெளியான விகடனில் கட்டுரை தேவையற்ற ஒரு Moral policing ஆகவே கருதுகிறேன். ஜெயமோகனே சொல்வது போல்  க்ளிஷேக்களை நகைச்சுவையாய் சாடும் அவரது அங்கத நடை வாசகர்களால் விரும்பி வாசிக்கப்படுகிறது. விகடன் இந்த விஷயத்தில் மூக்கை நுழைத்திருப்பதில் வணிக நோக்கமே பிரதானமாய் தெரிகிறது. எது எப்படியிருப்பினும், ஜெயமோகனின் வலைப்பதிவின் ஹிட் ரேட் எகிறப்போவது உண்மை!

இது தொடர்பாக நான் ஜெயமோகனுக்கு எழுதிய கடிதம்:
அன்புள்ள ஜெயமோகனுக்கு

வணக்கம். ஆனந்தவிகடன் கட்டுரை கண்டேன். அபத்தமாகவே தோன்றியது.
அரசியல்வாதிகள் போல Moral Policing செய்வதற்கு இவர்களுக்கு யார் அதிகாரமளித்தார்கள் எனத் தெரியவில்லை.
உங்கள் கட்டுரையை பிரதியெடுத்துப் போட்டதற்கே நீங்கள் விகடன் மீது வழக்குத் தொடரலாம்.
மற்றபடி க்ளிஷேக்களை நகைச்சுவையாய்ச் சாடும் உங்கள் நடையை விட்டுவிடாதீர்கள்.

என் அலுவலகத்தில் உள்ளவர்கள், என் நண்பர்கள் என ஏறக்குறைய 25 பேரிடம் உங்கள் கட்டுரைகளை மின்னஞ்சல் செய்ததுண்டு.
அனைவருமே அதிலுள்ள அங்கதத்தைத்தான் (எத்தனை த!) ரசித்தார்களே தவிர யாரும் “மனம் புண்படவில்லை”!
விகடன் ஏன் இவ்வாறு செய்தது எனத் தெரியவில்லை! என்ன நிர்ப்பந்தமோ அல்லது வணிக நோக்கமோ! விட்டுத் தொலையுங்கள்.
இன்னும் அதிகமாக இவ்வகை அங்கதங்களை ஆவலுடன் எதிர்நோக்குகிறேன். விரைவில் தாங்கள் இக்கட்டுரைகளை புத்தகமாகவே போடலாம்.
