Gaping Void TDHurst and a lot more!
Tyler replied me whether I will be interested in his “GapingVoid-100 people” project & I gladly accepted it.
I think I came to know about Hugh MacLeod in 2006 (when I just eavesdropped for the BlogCamp Chennai 2006 event) & syndicated him
Hugh was an ex-copywriter who now draws “cartoons on the back of business cards”.
I could not understand most of his posts but still followed him. After sometime I just did mark-all-as-read when I traverse his blog in my feed reader account.
In 2007, one of my favourite blogger Guru referred Hugh’s You lie for a Living post & from then on I do make sure that I do not miss his posts.
Even now, I could not get the context for all his cartoons (May be I can figure out less than 50% posts) but mainly I could identify myself in some his thought processes
I remember a few like:
Sex-cash-theory– Your work is like money & your passion is like sex where you cannot compromise either
- How to be creative
- Cube grenades (This one takes the cake!)
- “I just want ten thousand people giving me money every year.”
- Blue monster
- And how come I forgot his Ignore Everybody poster!
- Social Objects
- “But none of it works discipline. Early on in my career, I was told that success demanded 1 thing above all others: turning up every bloody day, regardless of everything“.
Although the last one is off-repeated, when Hugh (who is a copywriter, a creative freaky guy, whose profession is totally unique) says it, we cannot refuse it.
So how Hugh influences me?
There is no direct answer to this.
I read his posts, could identify myself in some of his ideas, when slogging late night for a work-related-issue, could remember his ideas (that this too will pass away :-)) & draw inspiration to help people, to socialize… You get that – its not easy to point one post. The best I can do is to introduce him to my friends and blog/tweet & more importantly follow his ideas by heart!
So here you go! If you are college student / an employee / an entrepreneur / any one who look for good inspiration, syndicate his blog, Make a point to read it every day (or every week, if you are not frequently checking feeds), Register for his newsletter, tweet your favourites, buy / print his cube grenades, discuss it with your community, spread ideas! Good luck!
